Hello Friends,
Looking for a great outdoor spring activity, pleasant times and lifelong memories? Then we have just what you are looking for. Come volunteer with us at the Special Olympics Spring Games being held at Coe College on April 14th. We promise you it will make your day.
The games begin at 10:00am and will be done by 5:00pm. The volunteer will be assigned to shadow a player throughout the day. If you cannot stay for the entire time we can work with having another volunteer replace you. Teenagers can, and are encouraged to volunteer as long as they are partnered with an adult. Good way for them to earn community service hours.
Volunteers, please reply to the FOICR volunteer chair, volunteerchair@foicr.org, with your name and address and the hours you are willing to volunteer. We will then sign you up and send you the rest of the details.
Don’t think about it, just do it !!

FOICR Committee.

Special Olympic events are held for kids and adults with disabilities and special needs. There are different events held throughout the year in and around Cedar Rapids. Volunteering at these events is an amazing and a very humbling experience. We receive more than we give in many ways.

A group of volunteers from FOICR Volunteered for 5 on 5 team and 3 on 3 developmental & competitive basketball, and helped in the morning from 8:30-noon and from noon to approx 4:00 on Saturday, Feb 18 at Jefferson HS in Cedar Rapids.

Volunteers helped in timing and scoring the game, officiating a 3 on 3 or 5 on 5 game, rules were given ahead of time and gone over the day of event.

FOICR appreciates the following individuals for their time and help on a busy weekend Ketan Puranik, Deepak Mehta, Ramakrishnan Kamalumpundi, Arti Anavkar, and Viraj Anavkar.

Table Tennis

Coordinator : TBD

Rules:

1. Each match is best of 3 games. Finals is best of 5 games.

2. Each game is of 11 points. 2 serves per player alternatively. A game is won by being the first player or team to reach 11 points, with a lead of at least 2 points.

3. Match begins with a toss, the winner of the toss has three choices: (1) to serve ; (2) to receive; or (3) to start at a particular end. Once the winner makes his choice, the loser of the toss has the other choice.

4. During serve, the ball must be tossed and must be visible throughout the serve.

5. During serve tossing the ball and failing to hit the ball is a fault. Opponent gets the point.

6. A serve that touches the net on the way, but still touches your side first and then your opponent’s side on the second bounce, will be a re-serve. There is no limit on re-serves.

7. Player serving will be incharge of keeping track of the score.

8. Service should be done from behind the endlines

10. Players change sides after each game.

11. If a score of 10-all is reached, both players or teams will only serve 1 serve each until the game is won.

12. One timeout of 1 minute is allowed per player in a game.

A player loses a point if he:

Fails to make a good serve (eg. throwing the ball in the air and failing to hit the ball or failing to hit it onto his opponent’s side of the table)

Allows the ball to bounce twice on his side of the table

Does not hit the ball after it has bounced on his side of the table

Does not hit the ball onto his opponent’s side of the table

Hits the ball before it has bounced (i.e. volleying the ball) unless it’s obviously not going to bounce on his side of the table

Hits the ball twice in succession (i.e. a double hit)

Puts his non-playing hand on the table or net or moves the table

Obstructs the ball with any part of his body or clothing (unless it’s obviously not going to bounce on his side of the table)

Carroms

Coordinator : TBD

Rules :

1.Each Game consists of 1 board. Semi Final and Final will be best of 3 boards.

2.Duration of each board is 20 minutes (except finals)

3.In case of no result, points will be used to determine the winner.

5.The contestant playing white ‘breaks’ or plays first, which can be decided by the toss of a coin.

6. When placing the striker on the board to shoot, it must touch both ‘base lines’, either covering the end red circle completely, or not touching it at all. The striker may not touch the diagonal arrow line.

7. For ‘back-shots’ you may only use your thumb or the scissors technique. It is at the discretion of both the players whether to play back-shots are not.

8. For ‘Forward-shots’ you may use any style as long as its a flick and not a push.

9. The red ‘queen,’ can be pocketed at any time after sinking your first piece but must be sunk before your last one. After pocketing the queen, you must sink one of your carrom men, thereby ‘covering’ it, into any pocket in the next shot, or she is returned to the center spot.

10. Once the queen is covered, whoever clears all their carrom men first wins the ‘board’.

11. Sinking the striker costs you one piece and your turn. But, if you sink a piece in the same shot, then two come up and you shoot again.

12. After sinking the striker, your opponent places the due piece(s) within the center circle. If you haven’t sunk one yet, you owe one.

13. If while shooting for the queen you also sink one of your carrom men in the same shot, the queen is automatically covered, no matter which went first.

14. If you sink your last piece before the queen, you lose the board, three points and one point for each of your opponent’s pieces left.

15. If the striker does not leave both lines, go again. You get three tries to break before losing your turn.

16. You can hit any coin/carrom men on the board.

2.Each match will be best of 3 games.

3.Winner of toss determines who serves first.

This is the first event by the new executive committee. The turn out was fantastic. Everybody liked the venue mainly because of the stage and comfortable seats.

Our chief guest Prof. Philip Lutgendorf captivated everyone present with his knowledge of India and Hindi.

Our Balavikas kids (and the teachers and parents) added color to the occasion by dressing up the kids according to famous Indian freedom fighters, kings, queens and other famous personalities of the past.

I think we did our best to bring us all together on this occasion. And it was a good testing ground for the new EC committe.
